Design On A Dime

May 11th, 2009

Thursday nights Design On A Dime has come and gone, but not without me showing you what our vignette looked like with before and after shots. The event was a huge success with everyone from Real Housewives of NY to Ty Pennington, Simon Doonan and New York’s elite coming to share or shop the rooms.

We stayed true to the laidback steez and created a cool out minimal room that was full of graphics and color. The room was quite the understated hit with the low Bo Concept table, the fought after Brooklyn poster and the rocks pillows and Fatboy making everyone feel at home.

People hung out chatted it up in the space. A great time was had by all and money raised for an amazing cause. My son who was my handsome date even scored a Nickelodeon coffee table book. You can check out more pictures here.
Stay tuned for the breakdown and link to all of the designs used in the vignette in the next post.

Making Ideas Happen

April 16th, 2009

l1140361-480x270

Today I had the opportunity to attend the 99%Conference put on by Behance and Coolhunting, a conference all about making ideas happen. As an ideas person, I start, stop, get frustrated, second guess myself and in that aspect just like 99% of ideas people let many fall by the wayside, but today’s conference reinforced that I am ready to fall into the 1% that actually bring ideas to fruition. That was the idea behind the conference, getting from the idea stage to actually putting in the work to make something happen. My highlight was hearing Seth Goodin speak and reinforcing the fact that we need to just do it or as he stated ship and ship on time. I also had the opportunity to speak briefly with him during lunch and he was as humble and witty as can be. Check out insight from the conference on Tina’s blog Swissmiss.

Train Inspired

January 6th, 2009

In the Summer of 2006 before Laidback was launched I was inspired to hit the subway with the samples I had and shoot my pillows on the train. I have spent years riding the NY MTA daily and continue to do so reading, watching, and dreaming, so when I wanted an urban backdrop to shoot in, I figured what better place to chill. I am not alone in my thinking that the metro is the ideal place to add comfort and design too, because last Summer Ikea redesigned four train cars in Siberia. Ikea having more resources and I am sure permission, hooked it up with seated cushions and even curtains for the show cars. It looks fab and is will stay in place until June 2009. I am planning a street installation for the summer, you never know where one might be getting laidback, so keep those eyes peeled.
